Veterans' Survey
If you are a veteran of U.S. military service who has never previously completed a UGA veteran survey or who started work at the University since 20 September 2002, please read the rest of this memorandum. Please also provide copies of this memo and survey form to any veteran co-workers who may not be aware of this survey or who lack internet access. If you are not a veteran of military service, you may simply disregard this memorandum.
Your participation in this survey is totally voluntary and failure to participate does not preclude your identifying yourself as being in one or all of the survey categories at a later date. The information collected will be treated as confidential and neither participation nor failure to participate in this survey will form the basis of any adverse treatment or have any effect upon veterans' benefits any employee may be presently receiving or entitled to receive.
The UGA Equal Opportunity Office is periodically required by the U.S. Department of Labor to survey the number of "special disabled veterans", "veterans of the Vietnam era", "other protected veterans", and "newly separated veterans" in the University workforce. These four categories are defined below.
I. Special disabled veterans include compensation-eligible disabled veterans (and disabled veterans who, but for the receipt of military retirement pay, would be compensation-eligible) who are rated as having a 30 percent disability or more, or veterans rated at 10 or 20 percent disabled who are classified as having a serious employment handicap, or veterans who were discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.
II. Vietnam Era Veterans. A veteran does not have to have been assigned to Vietnam to be classified as a Vietnam Era Veteran. "Veteran of the Vietnam Era" means a person who served more than 180 days of active military service if in the Republic of Vietnam between 28 February 1961, and 7 May 1975, or served anywhere on active duty during the period 5 August 1964 through 7 May 1975, and who was discharged or released from active duty with any form of discharge other than a dishonorable discharge, or who was discharged or released from active duty because of a service-connected disability.
III. Other protected veterans include veterans who have served on active duty during a war or in a campaign or expedition for which a campaign badge has been authorized.
IV. Newly separated veterans are veterans within one year following their date of discharge or release from active duty.
